Old Bethpage is a hamlet home in Oyster Bay Long Island. Thomas Powell an Englishman purchased around 10,000 acres of land from Indian tribes including Sacatogue, Matinecoc, and Marsapeque for around 140 English pounds. The area of land was divided up among Powell’s fourteen children who created farming communities. The one in the central section of the area retained the name Bethpage. By 1936, the area was still a farming community which decided on Old Bethpage. Right after World War II, a housing boom hit the area which brought in more residents and changed the atmosphere from a farming community to the hamlet we know today.
Plainview-Old Bethpage School District serves Old Bethpage with 4 elementary schools, 2 middle schools, and 1 high school. The area is home to all kinds of businesses, restaurants and family entertainment.
The most popular recreational landmark is the Bethpage State Park along with Old Bethpage Park offering athletic fields, basketball court, tennis courts, community center and playgrounds. Other attractions include Battle Row Campground and Old Bethpage Village Restoration.
